They might be small, but they are fast on the wing. Darting about to catch insects on the wing, their iridescent plumage flashing metallic green, the Tree Swallow is a joy to see especially when the sun hits them just right. My first real encounter with this species was many years ago when I saw one sitting upon a power line at a distance. It wasn't until a few years ago that I was able to see these birds much closer. They were readily taking to nest boxes set up on the marshes of Hammonassett State Park in Madison, Connecticut. This year, I hope to join the Menunkatuck Audubon Society in monitoring nesting Tree Swallows. I will chronicle my observations along with those I do for Osprey Nation. More nest boxes specifically designed with a slit at the top are being built for installation before the 2015 breeding season. Having seen great success over the ten years of the program going from just five fledglings in 2005 to 213 young fledged in 2014, the program is to be expanded in 2015. Tree Swallows need your help. Consider being a nest box landlord or give the gift of sponsorship to a wildlife watcher you know. Sponsorship through the Menunkatuck Audubon Society entitles one to see another nest box installed in Tree Swallow habitat in the Madison and Guilford area, to watch your occupants raise their young and to assist with banding. Contact the Menunkatuck Audubon for information. Learn more about Tree Swallows and follow the nest box program hosted by the Menunkatuck Audubon Society of Madison, Connecticut. Beautiful blog... we also are looking for purple martin landlords for the new housing at Hammonasset. We are trying to get the tree swallows in the banding program, no promises there, just high hopes.

I hope you do get some attention to your program through this blog post. And fingers crossed for the banding program. I had a lot to do with the banding program for the Ospreys in Branford - wished to have been able to take it further but that wasn't able to happen.
